With discussion of a double dip recession, Sageworks took a look at the things consumers are continuing to do to stimulate trade in the midst of economic uncertainty. Technical and trade schools are seeing double-digit increases in revenues, with bars and alcoholic beverage stores seeing significant growth as well. Consumers are continuing to visit their doctors, dentists, and accountants when they’re strapped for cash, and finding good deals while shopping online.


7 Things Consumers Are (Still) Doing

Consumers are:


1. Attending technical and trade schools.

Trade and technical schools saw their top-line sales grow 10.64% in the last 12 months.

2. Drinking.

Sales have increased 5.53% at drinking places in the last 12 months, while beer, wine, and liquor stores have seen 3.35% sales growth.

3. Going to the doctor and dentist.

Physicians' offices saw sales grow 3.46% over the last 12 months, while dentist offices saw sales increase 2.57%.

4. Patroning specialty food stores.

In the last 12 months, specialty food stores like bakeries and meat markets have seen sales grow 3.38%.

5. Visiting an accountant.

Accounting firms saw average top-line revenues grow by 2.49% over the last 12 months.

6. Sending their children to day care.

Children's Day Care Centers have experienced an average sales growth of 2.35% over the last 12 months.

7. Shopping Online.

Over the last 12 months, online retailers have seen sales increase 1.04%.
